News letter from Göteborg & Co 2010-06-04
The City of Gothenburg wants to bring the FEI World Equestrian Games to Sweden once more and plans to make a bid for the WEG 2018.
The plans for the bid will be drawn up by Göteborg & Co and Got Event, the citys event companies, with the support of the Swedish Equestrian Federation.
Gothenburg has a long tradition with equestrian events. The Göteborg Horse Show with world cup competitions in jumping, dressage and four in hand driving has been held in the Scandinavium Arena since 1987.
Gothenburg now wants to make use of all the experiences gathered during the years, not least from a number of FEI World Cup Finals in jumping, dressage and driving.
Gothenburg can offer all the venues within walking distance within the city boundaries and the organisations aim is to make the city “savour of horses”.
- We want the whole city to be part of the event. Our ambition is to make the WEG 2018 a fantastic and unique event for all of the equestrian family. Our plan is to make use of the existing major outdoor arenas in the city, as Ullevi Stadium, as well as Scandinavium Arena, says Svante Hjertén, Director of Events at Göteborg & Co.
Göteborg & Co and Got Event will now proceed with the study for WEG 2018 before the bid is presented.
- We support the plan for a World Equestrian Game in Sweden and are looking forward to a further presentation from Gothenburg, says Bo Helander, President Swedish Equestrian Federation.
The first WEG, FEI World Equestrian Games, was held in Stockholm 1990.
