Pressinformation från FEI - British Ponies Jump fo Joy
Just as Germany are a myth, legend, rock in Dressage, so are Great Britain in pony Jumping, who today at the 2007 FEI European Jumping Championship celebrated their eighth team title. With on their team James Smith and Mr Nice Guy, the only combination to score a double clear over the technical Nations Cup course, they finish on an overall score of only 8 penalties. Team silver goes to the Netherlands (19) and bronze to Ireland (22).
Individually, James Smith is logically in the lead. With 4 penalties five riders are tied for 2nd place - Mie Daugaard Reimer (DEN) on Edenside Sunshine; Carolin Zell (GER) on Wombel 17; Constant van Paesschen (BEL) on Angel 30; Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) on Top Chiaro di Luna; and Frank Shuttert (NED) on Top Chiaro di Luna.
The general favourite Dexter Liam Pondi, a magnificent grey Connemara pony who may very well be the offspring of a unicorn, has unfortunately withdrawn from the competition. Belonging to French owner Catherine Chambaud and ridden by Filippo Marco Bologni of Italy, Dexter literally flew over the course to win the first qualifier for the individual final which took place on Thursday 19 July. However, the pony, who had been in the holding box after the pony inspection, was found uneven in his trot. Having twisted a shoe, he has withdrawn from the remaining competition to the greatest disappointment of owner, rider and spectators alike.
It is interesting to note that this year, on the request of Chefs d?Equipe, NFs and NFs, a new Jumping format in line with the one used for Juniors is being experimented. It was felt that the previous format, consisting of a relatively simple Warm-up competition on the Thursday followed by a much more technical and complex Individual Final on the Friday and back again to an easier Nations Cup on the Sunday, did not offer for real progression and maximum opportunities for riders and ponies.
The format that is used on a trial basis this year consists of a first qualifier (125/130 cm) counting for the Individual Final; second qualifier / Nations Cup 130cm counting for the Individual Final; and an Individual Grand Prix 125cm with the possibility of a Jump Off 135cm. The first qualifier is open to all riders; the second qualifier is open to all those who have completed the first qualifier. The points from the first and second qualifiers are added to those obtained in the Final and the sum dictates who goes through to the jump off. Qualifying over three rounds allows riders the possibility of making up for errors made in one poor round early in the week.
The modification is met positively by the participants.
Pressinformation från FEI - Dressage Gold is Safely German
The Team Dressage medals were decided today after a Preliminary competition, which was the highlight of Wednesday 18 July, and a Nations Cup of the highest quality involving the following ten teams: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Spain. After their Junior and Young Rider counterparts defended in style the national colours at last weekend?s Championship at Nüssloch, German pony riders proved that the future of national Dressage is in safe hands. They won the team gold for the 18th time in a row with a result of 223.68%. Indeed, ever since Pratoni de Vivaro (ITA) in 1990, have German ponies kept the European gold firmly at home. With all the riders scoring above 72%, the German team is a comfortable 12.63% ahead of runner up ? the Netherlands (211.05%). Great Britain take home the bronze (203.26); the fourth-placed Denmark miss the podium for a tiny 0.63%.
It is a great day for Carlotta Hassenbürger, who not only wins her first European team gold, is in the lead individually (75,790%), but also celebrates her 14th birthday. It may be a first for Carlotta, but not so for her 10-year old mare Dulcia 4, who was on last year?s European team partnering with a different rider.
Sixteen-year old Louisa Lüttgen, 2nd individually with 74,947%, is much more experienced. The younger sister of a Anna-Katharina Lüttgen, a Grand Prix level Dressage rider, she was on the winning team in 2005 and 2006 and is celebrating today her third gold medal. Her 16-year stallion Dornik was already a team champion back in 2000. This is the last year for Louisa on the pony circuit; next year she will be making her entrance at the Juniors level.
The remaining two members on the German team, who are 3rd and 4th respectively, are 13-year old brother and 15-year old sister Sönke (72.947%) and Sanneke (72.684 %) Rothenberger, the children of German-born Sven Rothenberger, who now competes for the Netherlands, and Dutch rider Gonnelien Rothenberger-Gordijn. Sanneke, who was on the 2005 and 2006 teams and who won Individual silver in 2005, is riding the 17-year old veteran Konrad who has brought to success five riders before her. The 1997 and 1999 Individual champions Nicholas and Kira Kröncke respectively had Konrad as their partner. Not only are the Rothenberger children excellent riders, but they are also good linguists. Students at the Frankfurt International School, they are already fluent in German, Dutch and English.
The Dressage competition continues with the consolation competition on Saturday morning and the Individual Final on Sunday.

Pressinformation från FEI - En ponny höll inte måttet
In the hilly uplands of the North Rhine-Westphalia federal state located in the western part of Germany, surrounded by a thick spruce forest, lies the small town of Freudenberg. One hundred and forty eight ponies and young competitors aged from 12 to 16 representing 17 nations - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Sweden and Switzerland - have gathered to compete in Dressage, Eventing and Jumping at the FEI European Pony Championship taking place from 17 to 22 July.
The first day of the championship, before action has actually begun, was devoted to measuring the ponies and to Pony Inspection. Indeed, according to the new rules on pony measurement which came in effect as of 1 January 2007 and which are part of the FEI Rules for Pony Riders and Children, all ponies must be measured on site before participating in the 2007 FEI European Pony Championship.
The measurement took place prior to the Pony Inspection and was timetabled by nation and by discipline. It was the responsibility of each National Federation to ensure that all the ponies participating in the championship were in compliance with the FEI?s definition of a pony, i.e. 148cm without shoes and 149cm with shoes. Nevertheless, to allow for the fact that measurement took place under competition conditions, a 2cm tolerance margin was applied, i.e. ponies measured at competition must not exceed 150cm without shoes and 151cm shod in order to be permitted to compete.
The measurement was conducted by two Measuring Veterinarians appointed by the FEI: British vets Karen Coumbe and Tim Watson. Each pony was measured in succession by the two vets. When the two measurements differed, the lower of the two heights was taken as a definitive. The procedure was carried out in the stables, away from disturbances and distractions. The fact that these were permanent stables keeping club ponies contributed significantly to the calm and serene atmosphere. Before the measurement was done, ponies were identified against their passports.
In the interest of safety, no more than two people were allowed to accompany the pony. The measurement was conducted in a well organised and efficient way with generally relaxed ponies and teams cooperating with the procedure.
Of the 148 ponies measured, one measured out by both vets. In accordance with the Rules, there was no system of appeal and substitution was not permitted.
The FEI would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Federation for their help with the establishment of the new Rules, which were drawn up to deal with the frustrations and displeasure of those competing on the circuit. They will further be studied after the Championship and, if needed, will be adapted with the cooperation of the NFs based on lessons learned. This first implementation of new procedures with sanctions helped elucidate many issues.
The support and feedback of the NFs will be sought as the FEI continues its efforts to ensure all the ponies sent to compete on the circuit for their countries are in compliance with FEI?s definition of a pony.
