Jumping for Glory - Great Britain and Germany get a taste of victory
Great anticipation as the third and final leg of the FEI European Eventing Championship for Young Riders was played out in front of an eager and enthusiastic crowd. The sport over the past few days has been just phenomenal and the very contemplation that these riders will soon be evolving on the senior level seems completely appropriate. They have proved to be not only determined but also highly professional in their outlook and ability.
Great deception for Huub Van Der Mark (NED) who had performed brilliantly and been in the lead since the beginning of the Championship but withdrew this morning as he felt Exquis Idem du Roc was not quite 100% and despite this being a very important Championship, "the welfare of the horse must come first".
Thus, forty-three competitors turned up for this last and final leg, and with the individual leader out of the way, aspirations were flying high. The Jumping phase comes in the shape of a CCI** with maximum heights set at 1.20m. Given the gruelling efforts of yesterday?s Cross Country, today?s Jumping challenge would be most revealing.
Without further a due, we are pleased to announce that the new European champions are none other than the very talented British team - with three out of four team members in the top 10 - they finished at a score of 167.8 points! In second place, reconfirming their intentions to be on the top of the podium (they were also runners-up last year in Pardubice), are team Switzerland with a score of 216.6 points. And in third place comes Germany - as though last years podium had re-manifested itself (but with different players) with a score of 244 points.
While Germany may not have reclaimed the team title - Sabrina Mertens who faithfully bid her time in runner-up position behind Huub Van der Mark (now withdrawn) since the beginning of the Championships gracefully jumped a clear round with Divolo to become the new European Young Rider Eventing champion. And even though this was not home turf, the crowd let out a hearty cheer in response to the sheer brilliance of her performance since the beginning of the Championship.
The Prize-giving ceremony was attended by the HRH The Princess Royal, former FEI President as well as European Eventing Champion and a member of the British Eventing team at the Montreal Olympics, 1976 and the FEI Athlete?s Committee Chairman Lee Pearson, Para-Equestrian Dressage Olympic, World and European medallist. Congratulations to all the medallists and competitors that took part in this 27th edition and until next year, in Kreuth, Germany where the action should take place from 25-28 September 2008.

To be or not to be? in pole position
As the 145,000 acres of highland Perthsire which make up Blair Atholl Estate basked in the northern light, the Young Riders battled it out on the 4960 metre track for the Cross Country leg of the FEI European Eventing Championship for Young Riders. At the end of the Dressage phase, the Germans had taken the lead as far as teams are concerned, while Dutchman Huub Van der Mark and two German individuals were placed 1,2 and 3 respectively on the individual front. Begging the question is an early lead necessarily a promising lead? The revelation would be forthcoming?
The Cross Country Course for this Championship comes in the form of a CCI** and was designed by local Scotsman Ronald Alexander who is very familiar with the location as he has been designing courses here since 1981. The terrain is simply terrific with undulating fields, steep passages and long flat expanses dominating the landscape and is for the purposes of this Championship dotted with 26 fences on a course just under 5km long, with very clever features testing the accuracy and alertness of the riders. The first water feature at fence 15 was particularly challenging and required very accurate manoeuvres lest you take the long route which was very time consuming. At the end of the day this would be the fence to have caused the most upset.
As the riders laid their bets across country, it soon became very apparent that the British team were right in their element - with all clears and no time penalties, they effectively reclaimed the top spot and are now in the lead as we get ready to embark on tomorrows deciding Jumping leg. It?s rather remarkable as the British had actually foreseen gaining the all-important advantage in the Cross Country leg after being presented with the Course earlier in the week where they decided to enter Dani Cuomo with Ballin Willow and Charlotte Agnew aboard Little Beau to complete the all girl team already composed of Emily Galbraith and Georgie Spice. A gamble of sorts, knowing that they would suffer in the Dressage but be rewarded in the Cross Country - which so far is proving to be a most effective plan.
Rising through the ranks, Switzerland is not only comfortably sitting in second place but is actually very close to the British leaders with 2 of the team members placed in the top 10. Meanwhile Germany was relegated from the top spot to third place with France, The Netherlands and Austria also eyeing up the podium.
While pole position appeared to have little lasting effect as far as the teams were concerned, it certainly did help Huub Van der Mark from the Netherlands, paired with the very experienced Exquis Idem du Roc (whom he has only been riding for ¾ of a year). He was already leading the way following yesterday?s Dressage phase and today appeared entirely at ease as he swiftly manoeuvred through the Cross Country Course and successfully retained pole position. As he explained "this really is my last chance to show what I can do at this level" as he nears 22 years of age adding "this very well could be my last chance at a European title". Nonetheless, his ambition does not cloud his judgement as he congratulated the British team on their fantastic ascension from 7th to 1st overnight and added "we all have a chance out there and we will all do our best". May the best man or woman win!
Confirming her medal intentions, Sabrina Mertens from Germany with Divolo retained second place after a completing a clear round in the Cross Country while Nicola Wilson from Great Britain and Oingy Boingy successfully leaped from seventh to third with a very impressive performance today.
A great day of sport, the sun was shining, the highlands gently blowing to the Scottish winds and many a spectator enjoying the numerous classes and attractions on offer. The suspense which is consuming us all after this brilliant display will be put to rest tomorrow with the final Jumping phase set to begin at 14:00.

The Germans leading in the highlands?
Youth and the Scottish highlands have come together this year for the 27th edition of the FEI European Eventing Championships for Young Riders in the stunning location of Blair Castle with 52 young riders from 14 nations eyeing up the coveted title. As the Dressage leg comes to a close, the future of European Eventing is gently but surely unfolding with great talent and aspirations abound.
The actual category for Young Riders only came into being in 1979 in order to bridge the gap from Junior to Senior as it was often thought that it was a rather large leap. As soon as 1981 the first European Championships were being hosted in the town of Achselschwang (FRG). These Championships set the trend as the British took team gold that inaugural year and would then go on to take 13 of the 26 made available to date? This was confirmed again last year in Pardubice (CZE) where the British took both team gold and individual. Nonetheless, the Germans have never been far from the action, having won 8 times while the French have won 3 titles.
Suspense is rife this year as we conclude the Dressage leg and find none other than the Germans in first place, followed by France and the Netherlands while Great Britain is nestled in 7th place among the 10 teams competing. Individually, Mark Van der Huub from the Netherlands with Exquis Idem du Roc is in the lead while Sabrina Mertens and Sandra Auffarth from Germany are not far behind. But nothing is set in stone at this stage as tomorrows? much awaited Cross Country, by Course Designer Ronald Alexander, looms in foreground.
