Brink och Briar sjua i finalen

Det var en spännande, känslosam och omtumlande världscupfinal som avgjordes i Las Vegas på lördagskvällen.
Publiken var med på noterna från den spektakulära invigningen med celebra gäster till dess den sista dressyrryttaren var i mål och den åtråvärda pokalen delades ut.
Tolv ryttare startade i finalen med större eller mindre framgång, men det var det starkaste och bästa startfältet i en final hittills det var alla överens om.
Jan Brink och Björsells Briar startade först efter pausen, men större delen av den intresserade publiken hade intagit sina platser så den delen var inget störande moment.
Brink spände bågen högt och satsade allt. Kanske lite högt, det blev en del missar ibland annat travökningen och en piruett.
- Med fegridning hade det inte gått bättre, konstaterar Brink som ändå var besviken på sin sjundeplats.
Anledningen till det var att en av domarna höll Brink betydligt lägre än sina kollegor, i ett fall hela till 11 procent.
- Jag är inte dens om springer till domaren och klagar men i det här fallet frågade jag honom vad det var som inte föll honom i smaken när jag mötte honom.
- Han såg mest skärrad ut, säger Birnk om responsen och fortsätter: - Men man ska komma ihåg att domare är också människor och kan komma in fel. Det är ju ingen som klagar över för höga poäng?
Publiken hade också synpunkter på bedömningen och var inte alltid överens med domarna.
Lone Jörgensen firade sin födelsedag med att rida världscupfinal och avslutade sin ritt med att inbjuda publiken att klappa med i musiken när hon red i passage nerför sista medellinjen mot halt och hälsning. Publiken buade när Lones och Hardthof´s Ludewig Gs poäng bara räckte till en 11 plats.
Och även om en domare inte gillade Briar så gjorde publiken det. Briars imponerande ökade trav möttes med ett spontant Oh! och när Andreas Helgstrand och Blue Hors Cavan gjorde byten i varje på en volt kom en spontan applåd.
Debbie Mac Donald har till årets final skapat en ny kür där huvudtemat är att det ska vara kul.
- Mitt mål var att ha roligt på bana och att publiken skulle ha kul, säger Debbie och jag kan nog säga att jag uppnådde mitt syfte.
Och publiken håller nog med. Hennes kürprogram som fräckt krävde Respect! med hjälp av Aretha Franklin och tuff popmusik möttes med ett kompakt publikstöd som avslutades med jubel och stående ovationer. Och här var publik och domare överens ? en tredjeplats för Debbie och Brentina.
Vann gjorde Anky van Grunsven i skarp konkurrens med eleven Edward Gal.
- Jag var lite chockad när Edward slog mig i Grand Prix men nu är ordningen återställd på torpet, skämtade Anky efter segern.
Det vore inte Las Vegas om inte invigningen var spektakulär och full av fyrverkerier och lasereffekter.
Röken låg fortfarande tät när första ryttaren Carl Hester kom in i arenan.
Innan dess hade vi fått veta att ingen mindre än Kaliforniens guvernör Arnold Schwartzenegger gästade evenemanget, fått se första offentliga framträdandet av de tigertämjande magikerna Siegfried&Roy sedan olyckan och fått följa dressyrens olika rörelser på jumbotronen till tonerna av Walk this way.
Sedan exploderade fyrverkeriet och finalen var rejält invigd.

La Vegas hosts the BEST FINAL EVER!
The saying goes ? what happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas?, but if what happened here in the FEI World Cup Dressage Final spreads further abroad, the sport of dressage will be hitting the jackpot, big time.
Anky van Grunsven won her seventh World Cup title, but she was chased to the wire by pupil Edward Gal on Geldnet Lingh while no less than four riders scored over 80 per cent denoting the highest standard ever seen. Van Grunsven?s score of 86.725 may not have rung up a new level ? she?d achieved that mark with the legendary Bonfire ? but four of the five-strong ground jury awarded artistic totals over 90 per cent. And that was not just for the winner ? Gal rung up three 90 per cent plus marks and the USA?s Debbie McDonald hit the big ?90? twice from the judges at E and B.
The winner, who rode to her evocative ?L?Esprit Chanson? music, said: ? It is the most special win for me as I am not only proud of my own horse but also of Edward and Lingh. I was shocked when they beat us in the grand prix but after today, they can stay in training with me. It?s very special to have two Dutch riders at the top here.?
For the crowd, Edward Gal was the special favourite as they clapped and cheered to the high points in his freestyle. He said: ? When the crowd did that Lingh really felt it and gave even more ? he loved it.?
The USA riders put on a fabulous show. Debbie McDonald and Brentina wowed the crowd to Aretha Franklin?s Respect and that?s what they got in return. ?It was my goal to have fun out there?, said McDonald, ? and it was pretty obvious that we did.?
In fourth place, Robert Dover and FBW Kennedy glided through a fine performance to a freestyle programme Dover had adapted from way back in 1987 when he won the Western European League on Federleicht. With the help of Marlene Whitaker, Dover ?resurrected? music he has always loved including ?Hey Big Spender? to accompany an expressive programme that was adored by the crowd from the minute the pair walked in the joint.
Judge at ?C? Uwe Mechlem commented: ?The level was unbelievably high, each rider would come in and we?d think that test could not be beaten, but it kept getting higher. It was a hard job to find the winner for us, especially when the public anticipated, and we had to try hard not to be influenced by that, but we were so busy giving our marks.?
After the public appeared to expect Gal to emerge victor, Mechlem explained: ?Anky has the most fascinating choice of music for her freestyle. I awarded a ?10? for her music as I can?t imagine it could be better. Edward showed an example of effortless and elegant dressage ? the rider always together with his horse ? but for me the choice of music was slightly heavy for this horse.
FEI Dressage Committee Chairman Mariette Withages stated: ? That was the best ever FEI World Cup Dressage Final. To have all the top riders score so high is unique.? Las Vegas will be a hard act to follow.

Briar fick ett lättare arbete under dagen och Jan Brink rapporterar att hingsten känns i fin form.
B-finalen med de sex som inte gick vidare till lördagens kür avgjordes på fredagen. Vann gjorde Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff.
Plan B comes right for Linsenhoff
Germany?s Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff had her moment of triumph in the FEI World Cup Dressage Freestyle B Final as Renoir-UNICEF?s superior paces won through to head the six-strong class on a 76.15 score.
Linsenhoff bore her disappointment well after the qualifying grand prix. She said: ?Renoir is wonderful when he works with me but he let me down, and when that happens, he just becomes a very big horse for me to ride through the test.? Although not mistake-free today, the huge chestnut was more on his rider?s side to win ahead of Canada?s Leslie Reid and Mark.
US judge Axel Steiner was at C for the class, which was appreciated by another huge and vociferous crowd. Steiner, who had the Canadian pair in pole position, commented: ? It was a good competition, especially from the top two riders. It was a very nice recovery for Leslie Reid who was truly dancing with her horse. Renoir is a high quality horse who showed some high quality movements, including a wonderful walk, but at times the chips were down technically. But all the horses were generally improved from their grand prix tests, and looked more relaxed second time in the arena.?
If this class ? and the scores achieved - are anything to go by, for Saturday?s FEI World Cup Freestyle Final we can expect a true Vegas-style high-rolling razzamatazz extravaganza. In the first ever event to combine both the jumping and dressage Finals, the 2005 FEI World Cup Dressage Champion will be crowned first and can expect a roof-raising reception. As Axel Steiner emphasised: ? The most amazing thing about this show is the crowds.?

Kürfunderingar i Las Vegas
Grand Prix är avklarad och Jan Brink är nöjd med torsdagens femteplats.
- Det är oerhört tätt upp till tredjeplatsen, vi kunde lika gärna tagit den, och ändå satsade jag inte för fullt idag. Det är ju på lördag det gäller, säger Brink.
Brink och Briar femma i Grand Prix
Lördagens kür har ställt till det med lite huvudbry för ryttarna. Dressyrbanan i Thomas & Mack center är nämligen 80 centimeter för kort. Det är ingenting ryttarna gjort någon större affär av men när det gäller kürprogrammen så blir det en del att fundera på.
- Det gäller hundradelar och små marginaler i programmen för alla ryttare numera, förklarar Brink. Alla har sina program intränade på exakt 20x60-bana.
- Och man vill ju rida framåt inte bromsa sig igenom ett kürprogram.
Och det är vad Jan Brink gör på fredagen, funderar på små detaljer i sitt kürprogram, medan Björsells Briar får en vilsam dag med lite lättare arbete bara.
- Målet är att bli bland de tre bästa, säger Brink om lördagen.
Han tror att torsdagens plan med att inte spänna bågen för högt är en perfekt laddning både fysiskt och mentalt inför küren.
- Hittills i år har jag tappat lite i küren efter att ha lagt allt krut på Grand Prix, nu gör vi tvärtom.
Publiken i Thomas & Mack arenan är oerhört entusiastisk. På torsdagen kom drygt 8000 personer för att se världens bästa dressyrryttare och de visade hörbart sin uppskattning av de ritterna. Dagens segrare Edward Gal belönades med en stående ovation.
Dagens stora sensation var att Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff, Tyskland, med Unicef-Renoir inte gick vidare till kürfinalen. Ekipaget hade flera missar och slutade som 13.

Las Vegas! The Show is ON!
It opened with a blaze of fireworks and closed in a blaze of glorious excitement as a packed arena cheered Holland?s Edward Gal home to victory in the first leg grand prix of the FEI World Cup Final in Las Vegas.
Gal claimed victory over reigning champion Anky van Grunsven, his trainer, with a superb test from Geldnet Lingh that brought the 10,000-strong crowd to their feet in appreciation. The judges awarded the pair?s performance a total 78.625 over van Grunsven and Keltec Salinero?s 78.00 per cent.
?Geldnet Lingh felt so easy. He reacted to the smallest of aids,? said Gal. He had to endure much jovial leg-pulling from his trainer who said: ? I help him and he beats me! Where?s his respect?? Gal riposted: ? I?ve got to keep her sharp somehow!?
It was rather Keltec Salinero who was sharp in this hot-bed atmosphere where he made a few uncharacteristic mistakes. Anky blamed herself for the lapse in the one-tempi changes but was generally pleased that her 11-year-old champion was calmer in his test than he had been in the previous day?s practice session, and that he?s going the right way in his progress to Saturday evening?s freestyle finale.
The cadre of four US riders received a fabulous welcome from the crowd but it was the duo of Debbie McDonald and the beautiful Brentina who gained third slot just ahead of Robert Dover?s fluent performance with FBW Kennedy. Peggy Thomas? Brentina, who won the 2003 final for McDonald, performed with harmony, grace and ease. ?She felt wonderful? said a delighted McDonald. ? Brentina feels really strong in herself and she tried so hard for me.? She welcomed the crowd?s enthusiastic and supportive response and hopes that on Saturday evening her new music score will encourage spectators to join in for the last centre line and ? really have a good time?.
Dover, the six-time Olympian and one time winner of the World Cup Western European League said of Jane Clark?s chestnut? ? When he is not nervous, as his rider you never doubt that he is with you. I had a wonderful ride.?
The one cloud over the event was the tragic withdrawal of Isabell Werth?s veteran Antony FRH, who went lame suddenly just before the vet?s inspection. The German rider and former champion had hoped to retire her 19-year-old veteran of no less than seven World Cup Finals after a last performance here. Werth?s misfortune freed a berth for Canada?s Evi Strasser who was here with Quantum Tyme for the supporting invitational class.
The top twelve from today?s FEI Grand Prix go through to the Freestyle on Saturday, the starting order determined by the grand prix results, while the six remaining riders will compete in the B Final tomorrow. The standard was superlative, with thirteen riders gaining over 70 per cent. But the star prize must go to the spectators, who ensured this was the most exciting grand prix atmosphere the FEI World Cup Dressage finalists have ever experienced.

Stor publik i arenan
På onsdagen var det dags för uppvärmning på allvar och alla ekipage var välkomna att känna på atmosfären i arenan på Thomas & Mack arena i Las Vegas.
Ett imponerande antal amerikaner hade köpt biljetter till denna informella föreställning så den Globenlika arenan var fylld till hälften med dressyr- och hoppentusiaster.
Publikmässigt påminner arenen om Globen med röda stolar i olika etage men arenan är betydligt mindre.
- För oerfarna och tittiga hästar kan det bli knepigt att gå uti hörnen ordentligt, tror Jan Brink. Det känns väldigt tajt mellan arena och publik.
Björsells Briar däremot är en erfaren herre vid det här laget och han kändes mycket fin i uppvärmningen tycker Brink.
Briar verkar dessutom uppskatta värmen i Nevada och mår alldeles utmärkt. Det ofrivilliga riduppehållet har inte stört formen.
- Det känns faktiskt väldigt fint, säger Brink, som startar som nummer 14 på torsdagen.
För Isabell Werth känns det dock allt annat än fint. Hon anlände med Anthony som planerat och red honom i två dagar i USA. Men på hästbesiktningen visade Anthony hälta på höger bak och blev struken.
- Jag vet inte hur det har hänt, säger en mycket ledsen Isabell. Han kändes jättefin och anlände till USA i god form. Men sånt är livet, säger hon och slår ut händerna.
Isabell hade planerat att låta världscupfinalen i Las Vegas bli Anthonys sista start och hon såg verkligen fram emot att starta här.
Hon ersätts av den kanadensiska ryttaren Evy Strassner.

Jan Brink och Björsells Briar har landat och funnit sig till rätta i Las Vegas.
- Nu är alla hästar på plats här i Las Vegas, berättar Brink, och vi har kunnat rida ordentligt.
Briar och Lingh, Edward Gals häst som också är en godkänd avelshingst, fick inte ridas på den anläggning arrangören ordnat i Los Angeles och Brink och Gal tog sina hästar så fort osm möjligt till Las Vegas.
Här har de kunnat rida och låta hästarna röra sig på sig på ett bättre sätt.
Men det tog några dagar innan Brink kunde sitta upp ordentligt och han var lite spänd inför hur Briar skulle ta den ofrivilliga vilan.
Men Briar är i mycket fin form efter resan.
- Han kändes jättefin när jag kunde sitta upp på honom här i Las Vegas.
På onsdagen är arenan öppen för träning på eftermiddagen och då blir det naturligtvis ett nytt pass för ekipaget och en chans att känna på atmosfären i Thomas & Mack Center som arenan heter.
Mer än 100 000 biljetter har sålts till Världscupfinalerna till besökare från 13 olika länder.

The FEI Budweiser World Cup Jumping Final and the FEI World Cup Dressage Final, presented by Offield Farms, are being held simultaneously for the first time in history.
The World Cup Finals feature five action-packed days of electrifying equestrian competition. The schedule for the Jumping Final includes a heart-stopping speed class on Thursday evening, a nail-biting jump-off class on Friday evening, the Grand Prix of Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon, and of course, the illustrious World Cup Final on Sunday afternoon.
The Dressage Final features the world?s best dressage riders locked in a four-day battle to determine who will be crowned this year?s FEI World Cup Dressage Champion. The schedule includes the impressive Grand Prix on Thursday afternoon, an exciting Grand Prix on Friday afternoon for horses not entered in the Final, and the crowd-pleasing Musical Freestyle on Saturday evening.
More than 100,000 tickets have been sold with tickets purchased by individuals in 13 countries and all 50 of the United States. Better than 96% of the ticket sales have been to people who live outside Nevada.
First held in 1986, the Dressage World Cup Final has been held in the U.S. only once, in 1995 in Los Angeles. Germany and The Netherlands have dominated the competition, winning six titles each through 2004. The United States won its first title in 2003 when Debbie McDonald of Hailey, Idaho and the magnificent mare, Brentina, emerged as champions. Brentina is owned by Parry and Peggy Thomas of Las Vegas, for whom the Thomas & Mack Center, the venue for the World Cup Finals, is named.

Jan Brink och Björsells Briar har anlänt i Las Vegas efter ett tillfälligt uppehåll i Los Angeles.
- Allt är bra, säger Brink, både med mig och framför allt med Briar och i dag har vi kunnat ta ut hästarna så de fick röra på sig.
Brink och Briar anlände till Las Vegas redan på lördagen, en dag innan planerat, på grund av att Brink och de andra som har en godkänd avelshingst inte fick rida sina hästar på den tillfälliga campen i Los Angeles.

Det blir den tjugonde världscupfinalen i dressyr som avgörs i Las Vegas. 18 ryttare från 6 olika ligor rider finalen i Las Vegas. Tolv ryttare från den inledande Grand Prix går vidare till A-final som rids i Grand Prix Kür. Segraren i küren är världscupsegrare.
De som inte är bland de tolv rider B-final
Konkurrensen i Världscupfinalen är hård. Världscupsegrarna genom åren har varit samma ryttare som också vunnit Olympiska Spelen, VM och EM.
Anky van Grunsven, Holland, är regerande mästarinna och har segrat sex gånger med Bonfire. 1998 segrade Louise Nathhorst med Walk on Top i finalen, som då avgjordes i Göteborg.
